Furthur also did Fool in the Rain a couple times...one of Zep's most non-Zep-like songs.

I expanded on my earlier GD/LZ post:

Interesting! I always like to read what you have to say.

Do you work as a journalist, or have a background in that field?

Obviously not, or he'd keep each post to 500 words max and edit the quotes into little snippets. I like it the way it is, though!*

* although it could use subheads ... :-)

Says the journalist!

Subheads are a thought...but it kind of breaks up the flow, and it's a bit textbookish for me. I use chapter breaks sometimes in the Really Long essays.

Could use more paragraphing, too. Composing in Word, the paragraphs all look really short, but then in the narrow blog column they show up as big long chunks of text. Oh well...I'm afraid my style's a bit too dense to be easily read on computer screens!

Thanks for the comments, folks.

I have no journalism experience, and have never written "professionally" - strictly amateur.

I have sent this to several LZ fan friends of mine, and I have posted the link on my FB page (It occurs to me now, I should have asked you !). And did the same for your Velvets one . I think your Dead orientation makes you more alert to the live performance elements of the various bands , that most music journalists ignore . I think it is good, that you stick with the music, and not their extra musical differences, which have, to some extent, poisoned the waters for me with Led Zep. I makes me want to investigate their live stuff further .
Thanks .

Gee, thanks. I'd actually thought this essay was a misfire.
It was kind of directed to LZ fans....a bit of "outreach" on my part! What's funny is that I make many uncomplimentary remarks about both bands in it...

Your "uncomplimentary remarks" , seem honest, and clear eyed (eared ?). Here is what I put on my FB page .

This is not a Zeppelin bashing (or Dead bashing) article : but a pretty thorough discussion of the musical approaches of the 2 bands . This guy has done his homework . I think Zeppelin fan will especially find this interesting .

The same sort of "outreach", was intended . Sorta explain what it is we hear in the GDs live performance, by comparing them to what they might know ( or not know) about bands they like . I doubt I will make any coverts, but it helps my more open minded musical friends to get an idea why I have 8 gillion hours of Dead cds, tapes, files .

Nah, I don't think it'll make any converts!
"What's this? Someone's comparing that half-baked hippie jamband to our Mighty Zep?!"
